Selenium - an essential trace element
Selenium belongs to the group of minerals and is an essential trace element. This means that on the one hand it is vital and on the other hand it is only required by the body in trace amounts. However, this small amount must be supplied regularly through food, as the body cannot produce selenium itself.
Even if the human body only needs small amounts of selenium, selenium is an essential trace element for humans. In fact, selenium performs numerous tasks in our organism. For example, selenium plays an important role in cell and energy metabolism and therefore also contributes to the maintenance of normal hair and nails. Selenium also contributes to the normal function of the thyroid gland, to normal spermatogenesis in men and to the normal function of the immune system. Due to its high reactivity with oxygen in animals and humans, it also plays an important role in protecting cell membranes from oxidative stress.
As the human body cannot produce minerals itself, we must therefore consume sufficient amounts of selenium through our daily diet or a high-quality dietary supplement.
