Vitamin D is one of the most underestimated vitamins. Among other things, it plays a role in the regulation of calcium and phosphate metabolism, contributes to the normal functioning of muscles and the immune system and has a function in cell division. Vitamin D3 is particularly well absorbed by the body.
As one of the few vitamins, vitamin D does not have to be taken in exclusively through food - the body can also synthesize it to a certain extent itself through sunlight on the skin. However, there are many factors that reduce the "yield" of required UV radiation:
- the time of year
- the weather (UV radiation is significantly lower when it is cloudy)
- the geographical location (UV radiation is stronger in the southern hemisphere than in the north)
- the time of day (radiation is strongest at midday)
- skin care (sun creams significantly reduce vitamin D production. ATTENTION: This also applies to normal day creams with sun protection factor!)
- individual skin type (lighter skin produces more vitamin D than darker skin)
- Clothing (at least the face, neck and arms should be exposed to the sun uncovered for 10 to 60 minutes a day)
- Age (the body's own vitamin D production decreases with age. Incidentally, this is one of the reasons why older people are often prone to osteoporosis).
- physique (very slim people have less body fat in which vitamin D can be stored)
Foods with vitamin D3
Food sources of vitamin D3 are found almost exclusively in animal products, especially fatty fish such as mackerel or herring and egg yolk. For conventional food supplements, vitamin D3 is often synthesized from lanolin (wool fat). Anyone on a vegetarian or vegan diet is in a dilemma here. In this case, and even if some of the above-mentioned impediments are present, it may make sense to take a good vitamin D3 supplement regularly.
Vegan vitamin D3 from lichen extract
