Bioflavonoids:
Natural plant substances with versatile functions
Bioflavonoids are so-called secondary plant substances from the group of polyphenols. They do not have a direct nutrient function, but are so-called secondary plant substances from the group of polyphenols. Examples are hesperidin, naringin, quercetin or rutin. They serve as defense substances for plants against environmental influences, fungi, bacteria and viruses as well as UV radiation. They have a strong antioxidant effect and also support the coloring (lat. flavus = yellow) and aromas of the plants, which attracts pollinators and at the same time offers protection against predators or harmful environmental influences.
The human body also needs bioflavonoids, but cannot produce them itself and must therefore ingest them with its daily diet. If sufficient quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables and wholegrain cereals are eaten regularly, the basic supply is usually covered. In times of increased demand, such as during the cold season, you can take a dietary supplement with a high bioflavonoid content.
